About Sophia Doerr

Meet Sophia, a Madison and online STEM tutor with MD/PhD and AI training.

I'm Sophia Doerr, a Johns Hopkins-trained biomedical engineer, former professional data scientist, MD/PhD student, and 99th-percentile MCAT scorer offering STEM tutoring, MCAT prep, ACT/SAT prep, and academic coaching in Madison and online. But the thread running through all of it has always been the same: I love the moment a hard idea finally clicks for a student, and I love finding the words that make it click.

Confidence. Clarity. Advancement.

My story

I had to find my own path. I want my students to have a guide.

I remember struggling with the MCAT myself. I had to discover my own path to a high score, mostly through trial and error, and I always wished I'd had someone in my corner who could explain things clearly and help me study strategically instead of just harder.

That experience shaped how I teach. I focus on understanding before memorization, structure before grinding, and a calm, supportive pace. I especially love working with neurodivergent students and students facing unique challenges, helping them build systems that work with how their minds actually work, not against them.

My background

A working scientist who still loves the fundamentals.

I earned my bachelor's in biomedical engineering and applied mathematics at Johns Hopkins, then a master's in biomedical engineering, where I built AI algorithms for surgical decision-support tools. I spent several years as a professional data scientist before starting my MD/PhD, where my research centers on artificial intelligence for clinical decision support.

That range means I can connect what students learn in class to how it's actually used in medicine and research, and teach the math and coding behind it from the ground up, at whatever pace a student needs.

Teaching & mentorship

Mentoring has always been part of who I am.

Long before this, teaching was how I spent my time. In college I helped run community outreach at a local community center, coordinating volunteers and tutoring and mentoring students of all ages. I also helped found a campus chapter of Splash, a national program, started at MIT, that brings high school students from underrepresented backgrounds onto a college campus for a day of inspiring classes and a glimpse of what's possible for them.

I've also volunteered in community clinics and translated for Spanish-speaking patients. Showing up for people who could use a little extra support is simply how I'm wired, and tutoring is the most natural expression of that. I bring that same warmth, patience, and belief in every student to the work I do now.
